On 22 October 2020 Fikile Ntshangase was shot six times and killed inside her house in KwaZulu-Natal. Fikile was a mother, grandmother, teacher and dedicated environmental activist. Her body was found by her then 13-year-old grandson. Fikile was a vocal opponent of the open coal mine run by Tendele Coal Mining and its proposed expansion of mining operations in the area. Because of this she was intimidated, received multiple threats and in the end silenced. It has been two years and no one has been charged for her murder – meaning there has been no justice for her or her family. We all need to fight for justice for Fikile because if there is no accountability for her, there is no accountability for anyone. Human rights defenders are counting on us to shine a light on their lived experiences, so that the murders can be stopped and so that justice prevails. Take action now and demand those responsible for Fikile’s killing are immediately arrested and prosecuted.
